Norman Security Suite 7 Coupon Code and Review - Free Parental Control and Personal Firewall

Norman Security Suite 7 is a security solutions product developed by Norman data Defense systems, a company that has been in existence since 1990. This is a systems protection suite that has the objective of protecting your system from viruses, spyware, malware and intrusions.

While Norman Security Suite 7 has been certified by various testing labs, the certifications that it has received haven't been very impressive. It has been certified by West Coast Labs and ICSA Labs. However ICSA Labs has certified it only for the detection of viruses and not for cleaning viruses. West Coast Labs has certified the Norman Security Suite 7 for both virus detection and removal. This makes the software less impressive than other competing software such as BitDefender and Norton.

While there is no default scan in this software, you can schedule as many scans as you desire. You can choose whether you want to scan the entire system or only specific folders. The scan will then take place at the time you have determined for it. You can scan within zip files. You can schedule scans are daily, weekly, monthly basis. Yet, there is limited flexibility that comes to scheduling scans. You cannot, for instance, decide that you want to run a scan on Sunday and Wednesday every week. You can also not run a scan on every second Saturday of the month. It should have been possible to schedule scans any time and without any restrictions whatsoever. Hopefully this will be fixed in the next version of the software.

Norman Security Suite 7 works in coordination with your e-mail client to scan all incoming and outgoing email. It also scans any instant messages that you receive via messengers such as Microsoft Windows Live Messenger or Yahoo Messenger. If you configure it so, it will block e-mail attachments that appear malicious or alternatively block all e-mail attachments. Even without this software, you can use Microsoft Outlook Express to block all attachments when you're downloading email. The security suite goes a step further and lets you block only attachments that appear suspicious. This is useful if you use e-mail for sending and receiving attached files.

A full system scan that we ran on a system with 20 GB of data took about 45 minutes to complete. This included the scan for viruses and spyware. If you have trouble installing the Norman Security Suite 7 on your system due to the presence of several viruses and spyware, it is recommended that you boot Windows in safe mode and try installing the suite. We were able to remove the spyware installed on the system using Norman Security Suite 7. At one point the system froze and we had to reboot. After rebooting our it worked well and removed the virus that had caused the system to hang.

If you plan to use any security solution suite it is usually recommended that you install it on a clean system without waiting for a critical situation when it is infested with viruses and malware. Software like Norman Security Suite 7 offers real-time protection against such threats and after the smooth installation on a clean system you can be reasonably sure of having a system protected against viruses and spyware.

The firewall offered in Norman Security Suite 7 performs the basic functions well but doesn't do much beyond that. It prevents any port scan attacks and places all the ports in stealth mode when it detects a scan. This is similar to the way the Microsoft Windows firewall functions. Norman Security Suite 7 detects when a program is requesting Internet access and asks the user for permission to allow Internet access for this program. This is the way most firewalls functioned until a few years ago. Since the last couple of years most companies that offer firewalls have incorporated a feature wherein Internet access for programs is configured automatically without asking the user to intervene. In case of Norman, the user is asked to decide each time a program requests internet access and this can put users who are not very tech savvy, into a dilemma. Modern firewalls depend on a large database of good and bad programs to decide whether or not to grant Internet access and Norman would do well to have its firewall work on similar lines. This again is something we look forward to possibly in the next version of the security suite.

The Norman Security Suite 7 firewall has several options under the hood for advanced users. These settings are mainly meant for experts who know what they're doing and the average user is likely to get confused about what to do with them. Of course you can always leave the default setting the way it is. It would have been better though to have the settings presented in a user-friendly manner so they could be changed in an informed manner even by those relatively new to firewalls.

The parental control features of Norman Security Suite 7 do not get associated with the Windows accounts. This means that after logging into Windows, the user has to again log into the parental control account to go on the internet. You can choose between three profiles -adult, teen or child. Adult accounts do not have any restrictions. The teen accounts will block websites that relate to sex, weapons, drugs and gambling. The child filter offers the greatest amount of customization and you can block access to all Internet websites except the ones that you place on the approved list. If you provide your kids with access to a specific website and that website links to a different website, the website and links to will not be accessible to the kid unless it too has been added to the approved list by you. For example if you grant them access to the Disney website and your kids click on a link to Yahoo that exists on the Disney website, they won't be able to access Yahoo unless you have added Yahoo.com to the approved list of websites in your kid's Internet account.

You can also determine the hours during the day when your kids are allowed to access the Internet as also the total number of hours that a particular user is allowed to go online on any given day. The parental control offered by Norman Security Suite 7 despite these features, is limited. Like with most other security solutions software, it's not hard for a smart kid to fool the software. All it requires is to download and use a browser that's not supported by the Suite. The browsers supported by the security suite include Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Netscape, Opera and Maxthon. If you use Windows XP you can always ensure that only the administrator can install programs. This may be able to prevent your kids from installing a browser. This security solution suite is vulnerable even to changing the system clock and working around the restrictions imposed. Nevertheless, if someone tries to tamper with the settings or work around the restrictions, the event will be logged and you can view the logs later. The parental control features of the software are very limited and if you're serious about parental control it would be better to opt for dedicated software for this purpose.

There is no spam filter that comes with the software. There are no anti-phishing features and no way to protect your personal information from being transmitted on the Internet. There are many features that competing products have and that the missing in Norman Security Suite 7. There are other options available that would be better than this one.
